Media Center

Mrs. Langford is the Media Specialist. She has loved reading since she was a little girl. Her favorite genres to read include fantasy, adventure, and science fiction. Her favorite book series is Harry Potter. Mrs. Langford loves helping the students discover a lifelong love of reading. 

The Media Center is part of the Specials rotation. Teachers will share their Specials Rotation schedule with you. 

Counselors will be pulling classes throughout the year for Guidance Lessons from the Media Specials classes. If a class does not come due to Media Specials, teachers may send students on passes to check in and check out books.

• Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade are allowed to have one book checked out at a time.
• Students in 2nd-5th grade may have two books checked out at at time.
• Books are checked out for two weeks at a time. If a student is not done reading the book after two weeks, he or she may renew the book checkout and keep it for two more weeks.
• Students are not allowed to check out a book if they have an overdue book, a lost book, or a damaged book fine.
• If a book is lost, the lost book fine is $15.
• If a book is damaged to the point that it cannot be put back into circulation, the damaged book fine is $15.
• Please take care of the Media Center Books.
  • Read with clean hands
  • Do not write or color in the books
  • Turn pages gently so that the pages do not rip
  • Do not remove barcode or spine labels
  • Be careful with drinks and water bottles around books.
    • Many damaged book fines come from water bottles spilling in backpacks. Make sure water bottles are closed completely and stored upright in backpacks.
  • Do not let a friend borrow a Media Center book. The book must stay with the person who checked out the book.

Lost book and damaged book fines are $15 per book.

If you need to pay for a book, please go to My Payments Plus. The lost book or damaged book fine will appear in the fine section of My Payments Plus the day after the fine is entered into the Media Catalog.

Beanstack is an online tool where students can record the books they are reading and how long they have been reading each day. Mrs. Langford runs monthly reading challenges on Beanstack.

Readers Rally is a quiz bowl-style reading competition. The competition features questions from a predetermined list of books. 10 students will be selected to represent Dyer at the competition. 

Information about how 4th and 5th grade students can participate will be posted at the beginning of the school year.
